Step 1 of 3: Equipment

Plumbing and mechanical systems in a house sit on whatever was put in before them, and in much of Hempstead County that substrate is old enough that the water heater now running in it is several product generations removed from what the house was built around. Half the homes in Hempstead County, Arkansas were built in 1979 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). When a contractor opens a unit in stock like this, the question is whether replacement parts for that system are still manufactured, or whether the repair scope has to shift because the supply chain for that vintage has dried up. A failing element or a corroded heat exchanger is straightforward if the part exists; if it does not, the job changes.

The Parts of a Water Heater a Contractor Checks First

The tank itself is the most visible piece, usually standing in a utility closet, basement, or garage. It holds and heats the water your household draws on. When the tank corrodes, leaks, or fails to hold temperature, that is where a contractor's attention goes first.

The burner assembly or heating element sits at or near the base of the tank and is what actually raises the water temperature. The thermostat controls when that heating kicks on, and the pressure relief valve acts as a safety release. The anode rod runs down through the tank interior and slows corrosion from the inside.

The drawing shows the general layout of a water heater system, and a licensed contractor determines which parts apply to the specific setup in your home.
